On November 20, 1820, in the mid-Pacific, a whaleship out of Nantucket, USA is attacked and sunk by an enraged sperm whale. The encounter leaves 20 desperate men to face a three-month journey into hell – one that will see death, execution and cannibalism. The tale is also the inspiration behind a literary classic by American writer Herman Melville. Using computer effects, actuality, and detailed re-enactments, this film weaves together the manuscripts of the first mate and cabin boy, as well as letters, newspaper accounts, logs and maps of the time, to build the drama of the whaleship Essex – its voyage, its demise, and the heroic efforts of the men who sailed her.
