Music and the Mind

Examining what happens to the mind when we hear a piece of music

We have always presumed that man responds to music emotively, but Jonathon Hewes’ documentary prises open the mind to take a look at the mental and chemical processes at play when we hear a piece of music. Programme One meets Stephen and Isabelle who suffer from severe mental and aural impairments. They both respond to highly sophisticated works of music, and Stephen actually conducts. Programme Two shows us how music affects us emotionally in terms of the neuropathology of our brains, from six-month-old babies to a blind, autistic savant whose jazz piano brings hardened critics to tears. In the concluding episode, the viewer is catapulted into a futuristic world of artificial intelligence, to discover what musical machines can tell us about human musicality.
