Resurrecting The Mammoth

image

Beside a Siberian river, scientists and hunters wade through a summertime quagmire of mud and rotting flesh. They’re taking part in one of the most unusual scientific expeditions of the century: to bring the mammoth back to life. We follow Professor Goto and his team as they search for a perfectly-preserved specimen. The idea is to extract sperm from the remains and inseminate a female elephant. She would then give birth to a hybrid – half elephant, half mammoth. Three generations of cross-breeding would produce an animal 88 per cent mammoth. That’s the theory. But, only eight entire mammoth bodies have been found this century. Then there’s the moral issue of disturbing ancient remains to create a beast which has no natural means of survival.
