Examining the life of a former member of South Africa's most famous township jazz group

“Everyone from the barber to the milk boy knew our songs by heart,” says Joe Mogotsi, former member of South Africa’s most famous township jazz group, The Manhattan Brothers. In the ’40s and ’50s the Brothers sold millions of records and recruited such legends as Miriam Makeba and Dollar Brand. They even starred in a hit London musical. But Joe was only ever paid £2/10s for each of his compositions and hardly received a penny in royalties. After 30 years in exile, Mogotsi returns to Soweto to confront his old record company, rediscover his beloved country and remember those Songs From The Golden City.
