Specially commissioned dance films featuring some of today’s best choreographers and dancers
Film 1 – The Human Voice Choreographer Aletta Collins produces work that is witty, accessible and smart. She has collaborated with director Tom Cairns to produce a film that explores dance and opera in a tight narrative structure. Film 2 – A fascinating mix of contemporary and classical dance by Sue Davis, in collaboration with Artangel and the Royal Ballet. Award-winning film maker Margaret Williams directed the filming of the live performance. The cast of five includes the Royal Ballet’s principal artist Deborah Bull and independent dance artist, Gill Clarke. Film 3 – Featuring one of Britain’s most enigmatic performers, Russell Maliphant, the creator of extraordinary one or two-man shows in which his classical training blends with Capeora influences. Maliphant has created a film around a specially re-conceived performance of ‘Critical Mass’. Film 4 – Choreographer Mark Baldwin made his mark as an exceptional stylish dancer with Rambert Dance Company. His style is a unique fusion of contemporary and classical and his film reflects this eclectic mix. Film 5 – A film from talented new choreographer William Tuckett, one of the new wave of classical directors whose work embraces many dance styles. This film features one of the world’s greatest dancers, Jonathan Cope. Film 6 – Fresh from creating the movement for Stanley Kubrick’s Eyes Wide Shut, Yolande Snaith creates sensual and cerebral dance with a gymnastic and gestural vocabulary. Snaith’s film Vanishing Point takes its inspiration from Renaissance artists’ preoccupation with depth and scale.
