Although initially inspired by Bizet's Carmen, celebrated choreographer Matthew Bourne's auto-erotic dance spectacle barely resembles the classic original.
Aside from the obvious literal take on the title and concurrent themes of lust, passion, revenge and murder – the well known and much loved music is telling a different story this time. This Carmen, set in a small American town car repair garage, has been well and truly roughed up, and the result is an erotic and chilling dance film-noir. Gutsy, earthy and gritty – the film adheres rigidly to the original designs, ensuring that Bourne's divine vision remains intact.
