In the battle of man vs iceberg, man is usually the loser – it was an iceberg that wiped out over 1,500 people on the ‘unsinkable’ Titanic. Over the years, man has made various attempts to master these mobile ice mountains – we’ve shot at them, bombed them and even covered them with black paint; all to no avail. Only one thing can protect ships in frozen waters – the International Ice Patrol. These guardian angels fly the seas setting up an invisible safety line – “the limit of all known ice”. Ships that stray within this line risk collision and death. Meanwhile, another problem is looming, literally, large on the horizon. Experts warn that global warming is causing icebergs to break off and drift into the warm seas of Europe, bringing cold, long winters in their wake and, in the worst case scenario, another ice age.
