Scientists have reopened the debate about what wiped out the dinosaurs and two-thirds of all plant and animal life sixty-five million years ago. For some time they believed the cause was a massive meteor 10km wide that struck Mexico and prompted cataclysmic climate change. But now volcanologists are claiming that molten lava was the real T-Rex killer and that it slowly brought about their destruction over a million years. All the meteor did, they believe, was deliver the knock-out blow to a species already on the brink of extinction. Equinox examines the facts, concluding one thing for certain – that the mass extinctions accelerated our own evolution.
