Examining the reason for the upsurge in the 'saint making business'

The first stage of turning Mother Teresa into a full saint takes place in October 2003 when Pope John Paul II will declare that she performed a miracle. Vatican officials are convinced that Monica Besra, a dying Indian peasant woman, was cured of disease after a brooch once touched by Mother Teresa was left on her stomach overnight. But how can the controversial miracle be proven? Pope John Paul II has now created more saints than all his predecessors combined and, in Mother Teresa’s case, has even waived the five year waiting period. What is the true reason for such an upsurge in The Saint Making Business? And what purpose is served by ‘proving miracles’ in order to create saints in the 21st century?
