Sandman, The

A drama portrayed through dance

“Mr Sandman, bring me a dream” – you know the old song. All mischief and pockets full of fairy dust. But if choreographer Will Tuckett and the Quay Brothers know anything of the legend, they surely know how to change dreams into nightmares with this twisted and manipulative Sandman far removed from the realms of childhood. A drama portrayed in dance, The Sandman centres around the final moments of the dying Hoffmann, cared for by his physician Nathaniel and the young, vulnerable Clara. She is in the throes of love, which Nathaniel – as the object of her desire – is unwilling to reciprocate.

Spalanzani, the puppeteer, holds all under his spell and causes grief to satisfy his erratic whims. In a self-satisfying lust for power, he possesses his players, controlling time, emotions and ultimately, making the decisions between life and death. Torn between a world of reality and the supernatural, the characters find themselves unable to resist the unearthly desires of the perpetrator.
