Following on from Hello Mr President, Charles Wheeler delves deeper into the taped telephone conversations of LB Johnson’s presidency. Instead of the measured tone of presidential press conferences and studio interviews, we hear the true voice of men in power – by turns angry, confused, uncertain, inspired. Bundled into the Oval Office following the assassination of JF Kennedy, Johnson inherited the legacy of his predecessor’s policies. The two follow-up films concentrate on his dealings with the political minefield of the Vietnam War and his developing paranoia about JFK’s brother Bobby. The tapes reveal the dangerous pressure under which a president operates. Colour and context is provided by Wheeler’s interviews with the political movers and shakers of the time.
