Jerusalem’s Church of the Holy Sepulchre is the most hallowed site in the Christian world. Built 1700 years ago after the conversion of Emperor Constantine, it allegedly covers the very site where Christ was crucified. At its heart lies the chapel that supposedly encases the rock-cut tomb in which the body of Jesus was laid. Some people regard it as purely symbolic, but now two British archaeologists could be on the verge of proving that the remains of a cave tomb about 2000 years old lies within a series of Russian doll-like structures, built up over the years. Moreover, this tomb has a strong claim to be that of Jesus’ – the final resting place of his body as far as described in the Gospels. Martin and Birthe Biddle have spent the last 10 years investigating this possibility, and in Tomb Of Christ they present their incredible findings to the world, with evidence garnered from both the oldest historical records and the latest technological advances in the field of archaeology. But only when the innermost chapel is opened up will they know for sure that they are right.
