The True Love Waits movement was set up by Southern Baptists in the USA in 1993. Youngsters pledge to keep their virginity until marriage, but sexually tainted teens can also be made ‘brand new’ by a pledge to keep chaste. Once initiated it is the duty of family, church and friends, to police the youngster’s thoughts and actions. Youth minister Michael Slinker from Radnor Baptist Church runs a True Love disco and instructs teens on how to dance in order to avoid temptation, while Jennifer and her boyfriend Lance pray together before a date for strength against physical temptation. Fascinating, and at times easy to deride, this new religious movement has been taken up by 37 different Christian denominations and organisations.
