18th Century Underworld - Bare Knuckle Boxers

image

The 18th century underworld of bare knuckle boxing was a place where fast fortunes could be made, and down-and-outs and vagabonds could become celebrities.

And strangely, it was a place where Black boxers were especially successful, where they could enjoy status and acclaim as heroes regardless of race - just as long as they kept winning. The prize-ring was the one stage on which young men from poor, under-privileged backgrounds might achieve national fame - and it especially encouraged Jewish, Irish and Black people to rise above their often lowly beginnings. This is the remarkable story of three such men.
