Anatomy For Beginners

Controversial anatomist Gunther von Hagens performs dissections on real human bodies, laying bare the intricacy and beauty of the human design and lifting the lid on the mysteries of our own bodies in a series of lectures.

At the heart of each programme is a human dissection, carried out by von Hagens, each episode focussing on a different set of anatomical systems: movement, circulation, digestion and reproduction. Lesson 1: Movement In the first episode of Anatomy for Beginners, anatomist Gunther von Hagens dissects, in front of an audience, a man he met several times to explain how the human body moves. After removing his entire skin unbroken, von Hagens demonstrates the muscles of his arms and legs, opens his skull, slices his brain and removes his spinal cord and sciatic nerve in one long piece. Lesson 2: Circulation In tonight’s episode of Anatomy for Beginners, anatomist Gunther von Hagens dissects a man in front of a live audience to reveal the workings of the respiratory and circulatory systems. He inflates and deflates his lungs before removing them, slicing open his heart and injecting artificial blood into his veins to demostrate the vascular system. Lesson 3: Digestion In tonight’s episode of Anatomy for Beginners, anatomist Gunther von Hagens dissects a woman in front of a live audience to reveal the digestive system. After slicing off the back of her head so that he can demonstrate from behind the passage of a mouthful of food down the oesophagus, he removes her entire abdominal block from her tongue all the way to her anus and, after dissecting all the organs along the digestive tract, he unravels it to its full length of seven metres. Lesson 4: Reproduction In tonight’s episode of Anatomy for Beginners, anatomist Gunther von Hagens dissects a man and a woman in front of a live audience to reveal their reproductive systems. Following the path of the sperm from his testis, along the vas deferens and out of his penis, von Hagens picks up their journey inside the female dissection specimen where he dissects her uterus and finally demonstrates how a baby passes through a female pelvis.
