Baka: People of the Rainforest

image

Award-winning film maker Phil Agland spent two years living with the Baka pygmies deep in the tropical rainforest of eastern Cameroon. The trilogy of films which resulted are quite unlike anything attempted before.

This, the first, follows the lives of elder Likano, his vivacious wife Deni and their son Ali. Allowed to share in their private world, Agland demonstrates the complexity of the tribe’s far from ‘primitive’ life. We hear their gossip and arguments, witness their love affairs, as well as much of the Baka culture; folk tales, music and dance. Not only an anthropological documentary, it also acts as a nature study showing the animals such as giant pangolin, golden cat, tree hyrax and gorillas that share the forest.
