Battle For The Congo

image

Nearly four years on from the fall of President Mobutu and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), formerly Zaire, is still in the grip of a savage civil war.

But so huge and remote is Congo, and so complicated is the conflict that it's difficult to ascertain exactly what's going on. One of those leading the fight against the government is millionaire businessman Jean-Pierre 'Papa' Bemba, head of the Movement de Liberation du Congo (MLC). An enormously charismatic figure, under his leadership the MLC has recruited 20,000 soldiers and controls an area the size of Germany. This film represents the first ever attempt to investigate the legitimacy of Papa Bemba and the MLC and considers his role in what commentators are calling Africa's First World War.
