Bone-Breakers

As plastic surgery becomes more acceptable, an increasing number of people are willing to go to extremes to achieve their idea of perfection.

This programme asks why patients are willing to undergo risky and agonising procedures to gain a smaller waist or a few extra inches in stature. This programme examines a range of new extreme procedures from cosmetic toe surgery to rib removal to height increase and tells the story of a girl who endured incredibly painful leg lengthening surgery in order to increase her height by four inches. In California, the Mecca of cosmetic surgery, if a patient is unhappy with the shape of their feet, height or waist line, surgeons are willing to cosmetically re-shape them, but these complicated procedures are often achieved by breaking or removing bones. Bone-Breakers observes in particular the perceived pressures on women, to achieve and sustain physical perfection and how it has now dictated an ever-increasing demand on surgical techniques to manipulate body shape.
