Close Encounters In Siberia

The extraordinary story of the Tunguska phenomenon

In June 1908, a massive explosion in a remote part of Siberia flattened the forest with the force of 1000 Hiroshima bombs. But the area was so remote and the times so turbulent, that no one attempted to find out what had happened for 20 years. When the first explorer got there, he assumed he would find a meteorite crater but in fact there was nothing but flattened trees - and a mystery. Since then, over a hundred theories have been advanced, including the proposition - taken seriously by some Soviet scientists - that it might have been a nuclear explosion caused by an alien spaceship powered by nuclear fuel. The absence of hard evidence keeps the mystery alive. Filmmaker George Carey travelled to this remote spot on the hundredth anniversary of the event to find that it still attracted both serious scientific interest and strange beliefs.
