For years anthropologists have travelled to the South Pacific to live with the local tribespeople and observe their traditional way of life. But in Meet the Natives, traditional anthropology is turned on its head.
We follow the journey of five tribesmen from the South Pacific island of Tanna - one of the most southerly islands of the nation of Vanuatu – as they travel 10,000 miles from their "kastom" villages to observe the natives of a strange and exotic land called Britain. These men are used to wearing nothing more than a straw covering around their waist. Now they are leaving their island to visit the UK and take a closer look at the British way of life. As the islanders meet and observe the British 'natives', we are forced to think about the way we live our lives. The 5 tribesmen come from a village that decided back in the 1960s to retain their traditional way of life, rather than following the increasingly westernised paths of others. The series of three episodes will follow their journey and their observations about us and the way that we live, as they stay with different families. "...five guys from Tanna, which is part of Vanuatu, come to England to look at us and make a film. And it's absolutely lovely." The Guardian "This was all jolly good fun, and with odd moments that were touching or instructive." The Independent "...the result made for such charming TV...unmissable".
