image

The #1 rating ITV drama series - sold to over 200 territories with scripted formats airing in Spain, France and Germany.

We start back with Martin and Louisa - their baby has just been born and they have declared their love foreach other, but everything else remains unclear – including a name for the baby. Martin is still scheduled to move back to London to start his new job, and there is a replacement GP in Portwenn. This is all new to Martin, and he strives to do what is right – for Louisa, for himself and for their child. Should they marry? Should she come to London with him? These questions have to be postponed as they deal with the wonders and mishaps of being new parents. They take things day by day, adjusting to their new role, and living together in Louisa’s tiny house as Martin puts off temporarily his trip to London. They are just about coping; though this is not helped by the whole village watching them and wanting to wish them well, including Bert, and Mrs Tishell, who seems to have developed a particularly strong bond with the baby, in her own mind, at least. Then Martin’s world is torn apart when he receives the news – his Aunt Joan has died. Martin becomes embroiled back into Portwenn life when he meets the new doctor, Dr Dibbs, and her husband Gavin, her receptionist, and finds out that all is not as it seems. When Penhale comes to Martin with an intimate medical problem that Dr Dibbs has failed to diagnose, Martin suspects that she isn’t being quite as thorough as she should be. But this is not all – Martin eventually discovers that she has in fact seriously misdiagnosed her own medical problem, and has to treat her when she collapses. So Portwenn is again left with out a doctor. And Martin is left with a waiting room full of patients… This series brings new challenges for Martin and Louisa – as new parents and also as a couple. Martin is reacquainted with his other aunt,Ruth Ellingham, a Forensic Psychiatrist, who has some interesting insights to offer him, which are not always welcome. We also meet another new character, in the shape of Morwenna Newcross, who takes over as Surgery receptionist. The series also has plenty of challenges for our old favourites: Bert is close to bankruptcy and has to borrow money from a loan shark; Al embarks on new challenges when he takes over the running of Ruth’s farm; and Penhale is surprised by the return of his ex-wife. There are many questions that need to be answered in Series Five for both Martin and Louisa: how will they cope as working parents; can they bridge the gaps in their relationship and stay together as a family unit;and most pressing of all, when will they agree on what to call their son?
