A shocking portrait of children living in the aftermath of war in Gaza

In January 2009, over 1,300 Palestinians were killed in Gaza — many of them children. In the wake of this horror, surrounded by rubble and increasingly isolated by the blockade that prevents them from rebuilding their homes and their lives, War Child gives a voice to a handful of the children whose lives have been irreversibly damaged by war. 10 year old Loay struggles to adapt to life without sight after being struck by a missile that left him blind and Ibraheem, 11, sees his family’s livelihood threatened as their boat is attacked by Israeli gun boats. After spending four days buried in rubble, Amal, 9, suffers the constant pain of both the shrapnel lodged in her skull and the loss of her father and younger brother in the conflict, while her brother, Mahmoud, angry and confused, seeks justice for the death of his father but with no action from the West or acknowledgement from Israel, his mind turns to revenge. All are haunted by the horror of what they have witnessed, but still there is hope and humour in their lives. By allowing us to see the world around them through their eyes, and in their own words, War Child gives a rare insight into the devastating impact of war on vulnerable young minds.
