Syria's Torture Machine

image

Jonathan Miller presents this harrowing investigation into the systematic detention and torture of Syrian civilians.

While the Syrian government insists it’s fighting an armed insurgency, the evidence pouring out on the internet every day suggests an increasingly desperate fight against a brutal regime which uses detention and torture, as well as sheer military force, to suppress all opposition. Much of this brutality has been captured on mobile phones by Syrian civilians and activists, uploaded to the internet every week desperate to show the world what’s happening. Some of the videos have also been filmed by the torturers themselves. They show horrific torture techniques including beatings, electrocution and mutilation. The investigation takes us to Syria and Lebanon where we speak to victims, refugees and activists who have experienced or witnessed torture at the hands of Syrian president’s al-Assad’s forces. Their stories and evidence of gruesome torture and abuse builds a dossier of systematic abuse conducted by the Syrian government.
