The ultimate challenge
On the morning of 31st
January 1999, Jamie Andrew and his climbing partner Jamie Fisher had been
trapped for five days on an exposed ledge on a remote mountain in the Alps. By
the time Jamie Andrew was plucked from the ridge, Jamie Fisher was dead.
Miraculously, Jamie Andrew survived. Medical staff placed four buckets of water
next to his bed, one for each limb, in a desperate attempt to save them. It
failed and in days he had to have his limbs surgically removed.
In 2013, he returned to
the Alps to face the Matterhorn again, with Roger’s friend and neighbour Steve
Jones. Jamie has developed prosthetic limbs designed for climbing in the most
dangerous conditions, but they hadn't been tested on this kind of mission.
