Exploring the rise of the extreme commuter

If you’ve ever had thoughts of moving out of the city for a better quality of life and then commuting back in to work, this new show, presented by Charlie Luxton, is a must-watch. The rise of the Internet, the fall in air fares and the boom in city property prices presents people today with a host of new opportunities as to where they might live and how they might work. And it has also led to a new phenomenon – extreme commuting. Charlie meets up with three extreme commuters who all work in the same city and have similar family set-ups – but whose journeys to and from work are worlds apart. One has a six-hour daily commute and one flies home to another country at the end of the day. Charlie investigates the pros and cons for these extreme commuters - with a particular focus on the costs and the benefits of working in a city but living far away – and wonders what their life is really like. We dive deeper into the world of the international commuters, the increasing number of people who work in the UK, but live abroad: home for them is a holiday spot for most of us. But can you have it all? Are these extreme commuters doing a job they love –and enjoying the house and lifestyle of their dreams? Finally, we meet some entrenched urbanites who are getting creative with their space in order to feed their city passions.
