Secret Iran - Girls of Revolution Street

image

The children of the revolution clamouring for change

In Iran a huge proportion of the population is under 30 and these ‘children of the revolution’, too young to have participated in the 1979 uprising, are struggling with the social and political restrictions imposed since then. Young women especially are rebelling, and in the past year 29 have boldly protested against wearing the compulsory hijab by dangling their headscarf
on a stick in busy streets. They have been arrested, with many abused in detention. This revelatory documentary exposes the gulf that has now opened up between the Iranian people and their rulers, telling the story through a number of Iranian women, either inside Iran or in exile. It not only provides a fascinating insight to the women’s movement in the country but also covers the broader issues of injustice, economic deprivation and environmental degradation now causing such widespread discontent.
