A journey of discovery

Zoe, a politically correct American journalist, arrives in Madrid to research a book on The Myth of Machismo. Seeking an interpreter through the local newspaper, Zoe gets just one response - Antonio, an arrogant yet charming Don Juan, whose views on life and love are completely incompatible with hers.

Their relationship ignites explosion rather than romance and, discovering that Antonio is sabotaging her work, she fires him and continues her research alone. Her work grows harder when she realises most of the men interviewed see her as a candidate for sexual conquest. Among them is Julio, a flamenco guitarist who offers Zoe a crash course in what ‘real men’ are like. She adamantly declines, however her resolve is clearly weakened. She next meets Carl, an American university lecturer running Madrid’s English bookshop, who offers her the maturity and intellect she craves, which ultimately proves totally unfulfilling. Zoe’s concerned mother adds to her problems with probing telephone calls, which constantly end in argument. Feeling alone and uncertain, Zoe is forced to re-hire Antonio but her work is faltering. They begin to share confidences and, despite their incompatibility, an attraction develops, which each refuses to recognise. Then her agent calls to tell her the publishers have abandoned the book. Confused, and with all areas of her life in disarray, Zoe decides to head for Mojacar. Antonio accompanies her and on arrival she surprisingly insists on their staying at a small run down hotel. It is here that she reveals the purpose to her journey - she was conceived at this hotel when her mother had a brief dalliance with a local. The parallels in her own relationship with Antonio become apparent and the same mistake her mother made just mustn’t be repeated. A balmy evening seems certain to lead to romance for Zoe and Antonio, but yet again a small misunderstanding escalates into hostility and Zoe, frustrated and rejected, returns to Madrid, where fate, eventually, intervenes, leading their paths to cross once more. At last Zoe recognises her ultimate goal – love and passion.

A Starline production in association with Banfilm.
