In today's society we have lost the sense of community so this is a great format that will help communities rekindle their care and concern for their neighbours.
Presenters Gaby Roslin and Ben Shephard have just one week in which to transform the lives and the surroundings of the people who live in one street. It is a community troubleshoot which sees everyone play their part to help each other helping themselves.
Whether you are looking for a garden tip, have a financial nightmare, want to learn to drive, are looking for love or your car has broken down SOLUTION STREET is here to help.
Key Format Points
- Bringing a community together by working towards a mutual goal
- Utilising the skills of different experts to improve the lives of those on the street
Format Structure
In each episode our presenters arrive at a different street in the UK with just 24 hours to get it sorted [for production reasons this 24 hours will be split over two days – ah, the magic of television!]. We crane up over the houses and down into the street as the Solution Street cast and crew begin to arrive...
First up, they rally the residents to a Solution Street Surgery – a neighbourhood meeting in a local hall where each household in turn nominates a domestic bugbear for action and volunteers any skills or knowledge they have which may prove useful in the course of this communal trouble-shoot.
So for example, the old woman at No.42 is looking for a budget pergola for her back garden – she’s a retired music teacher; the accountant at No.13 wants to sell the old 2CV sitting in his garage, but who’s going to buy it when it won’t even start? (maybe the teenager at No.11 who’s just passed his test?); the family at No. 54 have rats playing in their compost heap – Dad is a graphic artist, Mum works in a bank; the people at No.45 are looking for a cheap winter holiday – he runs a haulage firm (might come in handy if we need something big moving); the woman at No.51 wants to meet ‘someone special’ – she’s a restaurant manager but never finds time to socialise herself etc. etc. Taken together, these people have heaps of skills between them that we can and will press into service (“I didn’t know we had an antique polisher in the street!”)
Our experts draw up a definitive ‘hit list‘of tasks to be completed across all the houses in the street which is then displayed on screen to show the team (and the viewers at home) just what they are up against in the 24 hours ahead.
With the gauntlet thrown down its time for our experts to rally the troops and, with each household having a vested interest in the success of the project, its time for them all to pitch in and help each other to get it done in the most efficient way possible.
Along the way we’ll enjoy the relationships that develop between neighbours who previously barely knew each other and pick up loads of handy ‘how to’ hints and tips on a wide range of questions that affect us all at one time or another. With the fast, almost “magazine show”-style turnaround of different items in the programme, you’re guaranteed to find something of immediate use to you.
