We see the police respond to a sighting of a man with a gun entering a city post office. Within minutes, four armed response vehicles are at the scene and surrounding the building. Night-time policing of prostitutes and the homeless is also featured. On the beat with a team of officers who have helped slash street crime by 70% in three years. Whilst on patrol they meet homeless people and street drinkers and discuss the cost of their addiction in a frank and sympathetic way. They visit a squat used by drug addicts and soup kitchen where many get their only meal of the day.
