Forgotten Painter, The

Selina Scott explores the life and work of Edward Seago, the British impressionist painter who was a favourite of the British royal family but was shunned by the art establishment.

When he died, in 1974, he left behind thousands of canvasses of his beloved Norfolk but also major works from his overseas travels to the USA, Italy, France, Holland and the Far East - particularly Hong Kong and Singapore. In this four-part series those who knew Edward Seago talk about their friendship with him: His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh recalls a painting trip to the Antarctic aboard the royal yacht in 1956 - later Seago helped the Prince of Wales improve his painting technique - and the celebrated actor Sir Donald Sinden pays tribute to the man who created his own, much-loved style of British modern art. And, although he was never made a Royal Academician, thirty five years after his death Ted Seago is having the last laugh: his paintings sell for up to a quarter of a million pounds in auction houses around the world.
