The Plight of the Romany People Even in these supposedly civilised and enlightened times, the persecution of defenceless minority groups still persists, despite the shocking events of the early 20th century that serve as a brutal reminder of Man’s capacity for evil. The Romanies living in the Czech Republic are one such group. The victims of violent racist attacks, stripped of citizenship, denied benefits and thrown out of jobs, the Romanies live in fear for their lives. This remarkable film documents the plight of the Romany people, trying to lead a peaceful existence in the face of persecution, within one of Europe’s rising democracies. Stunningly portrayed through the personal experiences of four Romanies and woven together with their ethnic music and poetry, the film brings alive the story and dignity of the Romany people.
