To fossil hunters, the fantasy of Jurassic Park is a lucrative reality. Fossils are big money and with thousands of miles to patrol and no real laws to protect the fossils, the plunderers have the upper hand – unless you’re unlucky enough to stray into the state of Wyoming. Steve Rogers, Fossil Cop, is the mastermind behind Operation Rockfish, an operation to patrol fossil theft in his mineral-rich state. In helicopters, in snowmobiles and in disguise he patrols and entraps the men who steal and sell fossils. Posing as a wealthy and unscrupulous buyer, Rogers identifies fossilised stingrays ($4,500) and Chinese dinosaur eggs ($20,000 each) and ensures that the men who steal from history and the earth are prosecuted. “It’s something I believe in. It’s not just another law-enforcement operation, it’s a personal thing with me.”
