Synopsis
The Horrific Truth About China's Orphanges If awards reflect a programme’s importance, then The Dying Rooms was a vital addition to the honour-roll of investigative telejournalism. Rightly showered with praise, Brian Woods and Kate Blewett’s devastating programme confirmed what had been suspected for many years – that Chinese state-run orphanages have secret rooms where abandoned babies are left to die of starvation and neglect. As Chinese law permits only one child per family, up to one million babies are abandoned each year. Nearly all are girls. It is the state’s responsibility to look after these orphans. Using footage taken with hidden cameras, The Dying Rooms gives distressing evidence that China is turning a blind eye to that responsibility.
