Fidel
Synopsis
Cuba – the thorn in America’s side for 40 years and home to Fidel Castro, the world’s last great Communist leader. Eisenhower was president when Fidel and his revolutionary troops overthrew the corrupt Batista government. Incredibly, Castro has survived four decades of American aggression, sanctions and ludicrous CIA plots. His skill as a tactician resulted in the humiliation of US troops in the Bay of Pigs. He has thwarted bombings and poisonings – and attempts to make his beard fall out. Originally a nationalist, he was forced into the pro-Soviet camp by US cold-shouldering – and the resulting missile crisis brought the world the closest it’s been to nuclear conflict.
Fidel tells the story of Cuba’s battle against the US Goliath and its struggle to reassert itself after the withdrawal of Soviet aid, using impressive archive footage and interviews with Castro himself.
