Synopsis
There are three million asthma sufferers in Britain, with 1,800 deaths as a result of the affliction each year. This Cutting Edge documentary uncovers a worrying link between asthma and poverty. Filmed during the heatwave of 1995, Fighting For Breath follows the lives of four seriously ill asthma patients living in Birmingham, where incidents of the disease have been increasing more rapidly than anywhere else in Britain.
The four subjects of the film have been chosen for their variety in age and affluence. Watching these people cope with their debilitating disease reveals that asthmatics from poor inner-city areas are three times as likely to be hospitalised from the illness than their more wealthy counterparts.
