Synopsis
Exploring the true essence of Flamenco

Passionate, energetic and spontaneous, for many Flamenco is the spirit of Spain. Leaving Las Vegas director Mike Figgis is a life-long aficionado. Particularly attracted by its feminine side, he wanted to explore what happened when women were released from its strict patriarchal traditions. Figgis and a minimal crew went to Madrid and set up a group of dancers and musicians who were all strangers to each other. Given six days to produce an original public performance, Flamenco Women is about the process involved in creating a finished dance spectacle. Using unobtrusive camera work, Figgis captures the essence of flamenco – the perspiration, the energy and the sound of the rustle of heavy clothing, the dancers’ heavy breathing and the frenzied clattering of heels.
