Synopsis
In the early morning of December 23rd 1944, Wolfgang Rosterg was found hanging in the latrine block of Camp 21. This documentary tells the story of his death. In the last months of the war German POW’s in Wiltshire hatched a fantastic plan for a mass break out. It was uncovered by American interrogators and the ringleaders were transported to the far north of Scotland. Two days later Rosterg, suspected of betraying the cause was dead. Ten months on, five men were found guilty of murder and executed at Pentonville Prison. Secret History tracks down the men who witnessed the bloody events in Hut 4 and uses documents from the investigation and trial to uncover the truth. As the Allied Forces moved through Europe, large numbers of German soldiers were captured and sent back to England. Many of these young men, reared on the propoganda of the Third Reich, were still fanatical Nazis. They were totally unprepared for capture. In camps all over Britain they dreamed of rescue and escape. When the plot in Wiltshire was foiled, they lost no time in finding a scapegoat and dealing out their own brand of rough justice.
