Synopsis
For the first time in nearly 30 years, Iraqi Shias can openly mark Ashura in spectacular style at Karbala, Iraq

Ashura is the 10th of the Muslim month of Muharram - when the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, grandson of the Prophet Mohammed is commemorated as the climax to ten days of mourning.

Despite the sense of liberation for Shia pilgrims arriving from as far away as Britain, continuing violence in Iraq provides an edgy background to the passionate ceremonies.
