In 1952 a killer fog descended on London. For four days yellow stinking air choked the city. When it lifted, 12,000 people were dead. Londoners dropped in the streets and suffocated in their beds. The blind led the seeing through the streets. It was one of Britain’s worst ever peace time disasters. Newly de-classified cabinet papers show that the government’s actions actively increased the death toll. Secret History reveals how they failed to heed the warnings of a previous fog in 1948, building new power stations at Bank and Battersea that filled the air with smoke. Afterwards they refused to hold an enquiry into the disaster. The program has great relevance for today, with over 28,000 people in Britain alone dying of air pollution each year.
