Mao's Children
Synopsis
Writer and commentator Marcel Theroux travels through China to offer a personal view of one of the world's most rapidly changing countries
Just as the affluence of the 1950s brought about the cultural changes of the 1960s in America and Europe, China's economic miracle is unleashing deep social change. One billion people wearing Mao suits and cloth slippers and with no greater ambition than having a bicycle and a radio have turned into 1.2 billion who want the best that money can buy. China's new young generation hang out in bars, wear designer gear, listen to punk music and enjoy a freedom never dreamt of by their parents.
Marcel dives into the Chinese social revolution to find out what kind of China this new generation want to live in and what they think about communism, Tiananmen Square and the West.
