Stone In early 1943, POWs held prisoner by the Japanese began to set up primitive hospitals in the jungles of Asia. For the next two years they used basic science and medicine to save the lives of thousands of their fellow prisoners. Miracle On The River Kwai tells the story of the prisoners of Chungkai, whose hospital treated POWs working on the notorious railway link from Burma to Siam. Three POWs, Jack Chalker, George Holland and Peter Hendry, return to the site of their camp to describe the terrible conditions and brutality they suffered at the hands of the Japanese, and the diseases that afflicted soldiers weak from hunger and thirst. They also reveal the incredible techniques they used and the raw medical and scientific knowledge they relied on to save the lives of comrades who were dying from dysentery, malaria, avitaminosis, dengue fever, tropical ulcers and cholera.
