Synopsis
The makers of The Dying Rooms reveal the truth behind an exploitative trade that no longer matches our understanding of slavery.

Everyone is familiar with the symbols of the old slave trade: wooden ships, Africans in chains, plantations, cotton, sugar and rum. In the past, Britain, America and other colonial powers made fortunes from slavery. Once officially sanctioned, now slavery is illegal. But it still exists and with the globalisation of the economy, is spreading fast across the world.

The makers of The Dying Rooms reveal the truth behind an exploitative trade that no longer matches our understanding of slavery. Now slaves are completely disposable, rather than expensive status symbols. Now their exploitation feeds into the Western economies – and every one of us benefits from the lower prices that are the end result of slavery. Slavery is no longer about race or colour, just greed, violence and government corruption, and it happens all round the world, from the homes of the Parisian rich to charcoal camps in Brazil.
