Soviet Echoes
Synopsis
The Soviet's Hidden Music Treasures
These three documentaries focus on the chance discovery of a secret archive of recorded and filmed performances by great Russian musicians of the Soviet era. The first programme, Treasures And Shadows, concentrates on rare screen performances by star musicians, many of whom were suppressed under the old regime. A particular gem is the unique footage of Rostropovich performing the world premiere of Shostakovich’s cello concerto. Subsequent programmes – Rewards And Punishments and Traditions And Hopes – focus on the great Soviet composers, including Prokofiev and Stravinsky, and consider the legacy of Russia’s musical heritage. An amazing opportunity to see treasures from a long-hidden Aladdin’s cave of music.
