Synopsis
A child’s-eye perspective of growing up in rural China and of the traditional lunar festivals

Phil Agland’s beautiful films follow three Chinese girls living in or near the ancient city of Lijiang. The result is a refreshing, child’s-eye perspective of growing up in rural China and of the traditional lunar festivals. Scamp lives on Snow Mountain. It is autumn and time for the Torch Festival, where children of the Yi minority light candles and torches to chase away evil spirits. Mu Li goes to school, plays with her friends and does her homework. But she is worried about the unhappy ghosts of her ancestors, so when spring comes she treks to their graves bearing food and gifts. Summer time sees Haiying at the Dragon Festival, where her parents protect her from evil spirits with medicines and charms.
