Betrayed, The
Synopsis
True Stories follows a group of distraught Russian mothers trying to trace their sons who were called up for service as part of the 3,500 strong Russian Maikopski brigade in 1994, and have since vanished.
Braced for the worst, but determined to find their sons – if only to lay them to rest – the women are pawns in a chaotic war in which everyone is betrayed and valuable information is as elusive as military protection. Clive Gordon’s award-winning account by-passes Moscow, the usual filter for news of Chechnya, to penetrate areas not normally seen by reporters. This alarming and emotional testimony of the war in Chechnya juxtaposes the corrupt, cold face of the Russian machine and the pain and suffering of the mourning mothers against a background of devastation
