Bureau, The
Synopsis
This major, four-part documentary series explores the development of the most famous and powerful law enforcement agency in the world.
When J Edgar Hoover founded the Federal Bureau of Investigation 75 years ago, he faced very different problems to those of the 10,000 FBI agents operating in 1990s gangland America. Mixing unparalleled access to FBI operations with rare archive footage, The Bureau examines to what extent Hoover’s legacy of power and paranoia lives on in today’s FBI. In its quest to suppress the rising tide of organised and violent crime, is today’s agency once again in danger of sacrificing the very principles of justice that it purports to protect? And, how far can protectionism be taken before it is seen as a threat to civil liberty?
