Day The World Took Off, The
Synopsis
The Industrial Revolution changed the world for ever and set society on course for the modern age. Country dwellers flocked to the cities; trains revolutionised travel and factories sprang up all over the land. But how and why did the Industrial Revolution begin? What was peculiar about Britain that meant the conditions for industrial explosion were all in place and what triggered this explosion?
The Day The World Took Off answers these questions by looking at society and politics in Britain and Europe at the time of the Revolution. It then widens its scope to show how the social, economic and intellectual conditions in the rest of the world over the preceding decades and centuries ensured that the Industrial Revolution would take place in the Western hemisphere while stagnation reigned in the East.
