The six-part series follows 19 volunteers from the modern world and their reactions to life in a grand country house in the early 20th century that is plagued by the all-too familiar themes of money, power and position. Within the house there is an intricate pecking order, which firmly places everybody in a set social position and decides every aspect of life - who can initiate conversation, who has pudding at lunch, who can have a bath and when. The hierarchy is all-important amongst the servants, but it is most obvious in the division between the ruling family and its staff. The Edwardian Country House opening episode in the UK peaked at 16.3% share (3.4 million viewers) making it the highest rating factual programme on Channel 4 this season. It has since consistently pulled in an average of 14.5% of the total viewing audience. The Wall To Wall '...House' format has proved a ratings winner in the past with The 1900 House, The 1940's House and now The Frontier House which recently aired on PBS in the US to critical acclaim.
