Synopsis
On Thursday May 19, 1977, 20 year old Colleen Stan left Eugene Oregon to visit a friend in Northern California.

She decided to hitchhike, as many people did then – but was always careful about which car she got into. When a blue van stopped to pick her up, Colleen was reassured by the man, woman and baby inside – and got in gratefully. They drove for several miles, until the driver, Cameron Hooker, asked if he could show her some spectacular caves that were close by. She agreed, and Cameron turned off onto a dirt road and shut off the engine. Colleen went to get out of the car but suddenly found a knife pointed against her throat. She froze in fear, as Cameron handcuffed, blindfolded, bound and gagged her while his wife, Janice, watched. Cameron kept Colleen in his cellar for the next month, leaving her hanging naked from the overhead pipes or stretched out on a rack he had made. He would hit her, getting more sexually aroused as he did, and ended up either molesting her or having sex with Janice in front of her. At night, he would keep her in a box, with a strap over her chest to restrict her breathing. In this film Colleen Stan gives her first hand and very detailed testimony of her story. Along with key contributors – such as Al Shamblin, the dedicated police officer who carefully constructed the case against Cameron Hooker and Christine MacGuire, the woman who successfully prosecuted him and put him behind bars – this documentary retells the shocking case that shook a small town and for which Colleen Stan will forever be known as ‘The Girl in the Box’.
