Synopsis
Cook County Hospital in Chicago is the real-life inspiration for the hugely popular TV drama, ER

Situated on Chicago’s notorious West Side, the public hospital’s patients are almost exclusively poor and black. In order to discover the reality of an inner-city emergency ward, film-maker Edmund Coulthard spent a month with doctors on the trauma unit which deals with serious injuries mostly caused by gunshots, stabbings and beatings. This is a world where people lose their lives over the colour of their shoes, where most black parents expect at least one child to be killed on the street. Stylishly filmed on hand-held Super 16mm, The Real ER tells the stories of those who strive to treat the casualties of crime, drugs and poverty.
